Geographical and political aspects

Vista Alegre is the independent neighbour municipality of Nasca (Nasca itself was founded in 1595 by order of Virrey García Hurtado de Mendoza) and is located 449 kilometers south of Lima and 600 m above sealevel in the province of Nasca in the department of Ica. Vista Alegre and Nasca are limited by the river Rio Grande de Nazca.

Vista Alegre and Nasca possess agricultural wealth (luzerne, cotton), cattle breeding and mining industry (gold, iron) and are connected with the north and the south of the country by the famous Panamericana ("dream route of the world"); additionally there is a well intact highway to Abancay and Cusco.

Vista Alegre possesses a dry and healthy climate with a temperature average of 19°C and an average annual precipitation of 0,25 millimeters. The town is surrounded by mountains, dunes, Pampas and drained rivers.

Nasca, the capital of the province with the same name, is world-wide famous for the name-giving Nazca, a pre-columbian culture, which lived in this area. This culture had its bloom time approximately between 350 AC to 650 DC and was particularly characterised by their artful ceramics with symbolic and geometrical figures, whose colour splendour is well conserved until today. That is also the reason for why this culture is considered as the best ceramics culture of the pre-columbian America. The underground aquaducts and the likewise world-famous lines of Nasca are also important witnesses of this culture. Up today, the secret of the lines of Nasca is not solved.

The name Nasca defines also a continental disk (a tectonic disk), a part of the oceanic crust of the Pacific ocean, which shifts itself slowly along the coast under the continental disk of South-America. This leads often to light and heavier earthquakes.

The modern city has a population of 29.360 inhabitants, the entire province altogether approximately 52.450 inhabitants (status: 2003). Vista Alegre is localized at the foot of the majestic "Cerro Blanco" (the "white mountain"), the highest sand dune of America (2.076 m).

The economy of this city is based on agriculture, mining industry, trade and tourism.

Historical aspects

In the geographical area of Nasca lived the great culture of the Nasca (350 AC - 650 DC), but here developed also the cultures of the Paracas, the Wari, the Ica Chincha and the Inca.

Testimonies of these cultures are scattered everywhere in and around Nasca: Mummy cemeteries, aquaducts, petroglyphs, pyramids and the famous lines of Nasca.

Many centuries before germinating the realm of the Inca a unique monument of the old culture was created in Peru: the "Lines of Nasca". What may have been the reason to create these unique floor drawings?

These lines were discovered in the year 1939 by the American scientist Paul Kosok. Only a little bit later the forgotten lines aroused the interest of an unbelievably tough scientist: Doctor Maria Reiche. She tried to explain, how these lines were used by the old Peruvian astronomers: as gigantic sun and moon calendars. It was also her who uncovered these lines hidden under the sand, and with her discovery she justified the inaccurate legends and myths of the village inhabitants.

The impressive and mysterious "Lines of Nasca" are one the most important testimonies of the old pre-incaic Peruvian cultures: source of a an up today unexplained knowledge and an amazing certificate of the celestial phenomenas of that time.

Until today many secrets of the geoglyphs partially covered with bricks are not yet solved. Scientists set up the most diverse hypotheses for the origin of the lines; and the Austrian author Erich von Daeniken even saw the lines as signals and runways for extraterristrial spaceships, the ships of the Gods.

Maria Reiche however defined the strange legacy of the old Peruvian cultures as "the lines of the Pampas of Nasca continue to be anything as a challenge for the scientists and researchers of the pre-incaic Peruvian cultures. In my opinion the old Peruvians developed an alphabet, in order to note the most important astronomical cases of those days. The Pampas of Nasca are the pages of a book, that was written with this strange alphabet."

The discovery

1927 the archaeologist Mejía Xespe - an assistant of Julio C Tello, the father of the Peruvian archaeology - was informed about the mysterious floor drawings close Nasca at the Peruvian coast. In those days the archaeological studies just began, and the interest in the lines of the Pampas of Nasca was not very large. We must understand however that for the scientists of this time the pre-incaic cultures (like the Chavín in the department Ancash, the Chan Chan in Trujillo and naturally the Inca in the majestic Machu Picchu in Cusco) were much more interesting.

But it was in the year 1939, when another researcher arrived at Peru: Doctor Paul Kosok. Attracted by its interest in the pre-colubian cultures he first undertook a journey into the south of the country. With an intermediate stop on a mountain he noticed for the first time the extensive floor drawings to both sides of the road.

Beeing curiously, Kosok cleaned the first geometrical figures from the sand and dust of the centuries and opened the most diverse geometrical figures: Triangles, rectangles, squares etc. The lines were oriented in different directions and were of various sizes, some only narrow paths, other broad ways.

To his astonishment he saw that one of these figures represented a bird in flight, when he transferred the figures of his discovery true to scale on a piece of paper the same day. Had he discovered a key to a great secret? Kosok assumed that these drawings represented the largest astronomical book of the world.

Newer studies show that the Nascas created these lines with the intention of preserving different important data of the astronomical calendar, for example the arrival of the winter, the arrival of the summer and other important data, which were important to their productive activities.

In 1946 Kosok went back into his country and asked Maria Reiche, who had supported him with his past investigations to continue the study of the drawings. Maria Reiche continued this work up to the end of her life...

Flight over the Lines of Nasca

The mysterious legacy of the ancient Nascas that is represented by the lines and figures in the desert of the stony wasteland of the Pampas of San José can be clearly observed from the single-engine Cessnas, which execute daily flights over this area, preferably in the early morning hours.

The lines and figures of Nasca were examined in detail by the German mathematics Dr. Maria Reiche Neumann. She stated that these lines represent the extensive knowledge of astronomy of the ancient Nasca.

If you fly over these different tiny and large figures within the wasteland of Nasca, you will surely ask yourselves, how humans could design these marvelous figures. Or are these figures possibly the work of extraterristrial lifeforms? How could they arrange the figures so perfectly and the lines so accurately even? Why are they kept in such a good condition despite their age of approximately 1.500 years? For which purpose were they created? Questions over questions...

A journey which will become one the most impressive experiences of your life!
